Everything you need to know for your QLD Safety Certificate

Whether you are selling your car, re-registering it, or transferring ownership in Brisbane, a Safety Certificate (RWC) is a legal requirement. As a mobile mechanic, we make the process easy by coming directly to you.

When is it needed?

  • Before transferring ownership of a registered vehicle to a new owner (other than a dealer).
  • When registering an unregistered vehicle in Queensland.
  • You must give the buyer a current safety certificate upon transfer. Failing to do so can result in large fines.

Certificate Validity

  • Private Sellers: Valid for 2 months or 2,000km (whichever expires first) from the date of issue.
  • Licensed Dealers: Valid for 3 months or 1,000km.
  • A safety certificate can only be used for one transfer. You will need a new one each time you sell.

RWC Preparation Checklist

Use this quick guide to see if your car is ready for an inspection.

Minimum Tread Depth: All tyres must have a minimum of 1.5mm tread depth across the main grooves.

Spare Tyre: While not always mandatory for the RWC, it must be in safe condition if present.

The "Visible Light Transmission" (VLT) is the amount of light that passes through your windows.

  • Front Windscreen: No tint allowed (except for a sun-strip at the very top).
  • Driver & Front Passenger Windows: Minimum 35% VLT.
  • Rear & Back Windows: Minimum 20% VLT (standard passenger cars).

Windscreen: No cracks or chips in the "primary vision area" (directly in front of the driver).

Wipers: Blades must be in good condition (not perished) and the washer jets must spray water correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Roadworthy Certificates (RWC)

1. What is a Queensland Safety Certificate (RWC)?
In Queensland, a Safety Certificate (formerly known as a Roadworthy Certificate or RWC) is a mandatory document needed when offering a vehicle for sale, transferring registration to a new owner, or re-registering an unregistered vehicle. It confirms that the vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).
2. How long is a Safety Certificate valid for?

For Private Sellers: The certificate is valid for 2 months or 2,000km (whichever comes first) from the date of issue.

For Licensed Dealers: It is valid for 3 months or 1,000km (whichever comes first).

3. What happens if my vehicle fails the inspection?

Don’t worry! If your vehicle doesn't pass the first time, you have 14 days to fix the identified issues. Once the repairs are done, we will perform a re-inspection. If everything is compliant, we will issue your certificate.

Pro-tip: Checking your light bulbs and tyre tread before we arrive can save you a re-inspection!

4. Can you issue a digital Safety Certificate?
Yes! As an approved mobile examiner in Brisbane, we issue Electronic Safety Certificates. These are automatically sent to TMR, making your registration transfer or sale much faster and paperless. You will receive a PDF copy via email for your records.
5. Do I need an RWC if I’m transferring the car to a family member?
In most cases, yes. However, there are specific exemptions (e.g., transfers between spouses). We recommend checking the latest QLD TMR guidelines, but generally, if the car is changing names on the registration, an RWC is required.
6. Why choose a Mobile RWC service?
Convenience is key! Instead of driving to a workshop and waiting for hours, we come to you. Whether you are at home or at work in Brisbane, we perform the inspection on-site, saving you time and hassle.
7. What is NOT covered in an RWC inspection?
It’s important to note that a Safety Certificate is not a comprehensive mechanical inspection. It only covers safety-related items (brakes, tyres, lights, etc.). It does not guarantee that the engine, gearbox, or air conditioning are in perfect condition. For a full mechanical check, ask about our Pre-Purchase Inspection service!
